This is 534-page one-of-a-kind chess book belongs in every serious chess player's library. It contains all of the useful, practical, information from over 400 chess books (plus many other sources). It is jam-packed with principles, tips, techniques, tricks, rules-of-thumb, general advice, and chess pearls of wisdom from the Masters. As a result, it contains more helpful information than certainly any other chess book in history. By eliminating the diagrams, games, variations and excessive examples, the book is about 40,000 pages shorter, 8 feet thinner, 188 pounds lighter than it would be... and it saves you about $8,000! If you want examples, you can get them from many other books and games. However, if you want a single book that covers nearly all of the essential concepts in chess; this is definitely the book for you. Being all text, you can take it with you wherever you go and read it (without a board). You can read it in your recliner, on a train, at the beach, in a restaurant, in the bathtub... almost anywhere (although probably not in the shower or while driving). You might be wondering if, without variations and examples, it can be easily comprehended. Well, aren't visualization and the process of doing things in your head at the very core of playing chess (not to mention the learning process itself)? Actually, the information is more likely to be retained by conceptualizing it. Take a look at the Introduction and Contents to get an idea just how comprehensive the book is. Is this book for all chess players? Actually, it should be very beneficial for almost all chess players from beginner up to about the master level. This book is for serious students of the game. It is also ideal for chess teachers. It is a textbook designed for the purpose of dispensing chess knowledge.

Review
A terrific new book has just been published... It is over 500 pages and is titled Chess Words of Wisdom... beautiful text and thousands of paragraphs of research... Especially targeted is: improvement. No diagrams, not one game. At first, like some might be, I was slightly skeptical but I got a copy and it was more than promised. ... high-quality publishing. An amazing book... When you see the structure and its organization you will be as impressed as I was... Even the design of the book is excellent... A 5 star book! It s sort of like Wisdom of the ages by its most eminent sages! ... The book is $34.95, visually attractive (i.e., good typography), and indexed to the point of absolute usefulness. This is a book to be read, used, and enjoyed... it is a delight.... You'll love... the synthesis of improvement topics and principles. --Bob Long, Thinkers' Press
Kudos! Just glanced through your book which displays an enormous amount of research and chess erudition. Looking forward to some enjoyable reading... ----Larry Evans, Grandmaster, author, journalist, and five-time US Chess Champion
...it's definitely unique in its verbal approach, which is particularly useful especially to adults learning the game. --Jennifer Shahade, author, journalist, two-time American Women's Chess Champion and FIDE Woman Grandmaster

Chess Words of Wisdom
By R. B. Long
How about thousands of tips and sayings? I have what you need in Mike Henebry's Chess Word of Wisdom, The Principles, methods and Essential Knowledge of Chess. An amazing book of quotes, derivations, and masterfully organized (an art in itself).
Mike's been a good customer of mine and no doubt he believes a lot of literature I sold him over the years contributed heavily to this book and no doubt it has. He says he has 600 books in his library but he only used 400 of them to compile this huge "anthology" as 200 of them appeared to have no value for what he was attempting to do. I believe that. However, to be more complete he also read lots of chess magazines, even The Chess Reports!
I believe Mike told me this was a 40 years work in progress (note taking)! Mike, you are slow! Just kidding. When you see the structure and its organization you will be as impressed as I was. The best way to "see" the value of this monumental product is to quote some "lessons" from it.
First, however, let me quote the chapter headings:
1. Opening
2. Middlegame
3. Endgame
4. Checkmate
5. Style
6. Tournaments
7. Time-Trouble
8. Mistakes
9. Studying/Training
10. Speed Chess/Blitz
11. Computers
12. Correspondence Chess
13. About Principles
14. Acknowledgements*
15. Sources*, and
Index.
* (not really chapters)
And within each chapter there are many categories such as 8. Mistakes:
Causes of Mistakes
Avoiding Mistakes
Playing after Blunder
Luck
Before you bring up the same potential objection that I mentioned to Mike, I will tell you right away, as he does in the Introduction: this an all text book. No diagrams, no analysis, nor any games or variations--anywhere. That's actually kind of nice for a change.
If you want to learn ABOUT chess this book would be a great start. As Mike writes, "...the fact remains that many chess books contain only a few paragraphs of valuable advice."
This $34.95 book is over 500 pages and you CAN buy it from me, G&L CHESS.
Before I give you some contents I have some other words about this book such a "list" of the types of things you can wallow in: principles, truisms, maxims, axioms, aphorisms, precepts, tips, formulas, insights, techniques, paradigms, dogmas, opinions, admonitions, proverbs, heuristics, tricks, adages, doctrines, golden nuggets, tenets, short cuts, rules-of-thumb, chess pearls from the masters, and the proverbial "tons more."
The "point" of this book is to learn how to play better chess through the sages of the ages, as I call it. It IS instructional. For that reason he has no "sidebars," but it appears he is not that keen on them anyway, but I am, so we have some differences.
There are some other neat aspects of the book and those came from considerations given by GM Larry Kaufman for evaluating the material worth of pieces (and some other sections Mike says) and updating his comments. While this would be relatively easy for Larry to do, for the non-expert, like Mike, or say myself, this would be a pain.
Sometimes there will be contradictions among experts, as expected, but nothing major Henebry says--we are in a period now of "fine tuning."
No fluff, just "wisdom." Here we go with some:
Here's a note by Asa Hoffmann from an article he wrote for Squares (a TPi publication in 2003):
* "Even the strongest players sometimes overlook the idea of moving the same piece twice in the opening."
* A lead of three moves in development can be a decisive advantage.
* If the queens are off the board, castling is not always necessary.
* These days there is no moral obligation to accept a gambit.
This next is from Joseph Henry Blackburne about the King's Gambit:
* Nothing is better calculated to improve his game than plenty of skittle or off-hand practice at this opening with a player somewhat superior to himself. When the novice can play P-KB4 (f4) with an idea in his head of what is to follow, he has begun to understand chess.
One of Mike's favorite quotes comes from Roman Dzindzichashvili:
* What is theory today? Theory is when two players play and one of them makes a new move, and that's it. That becomes theory until someone makes a better move. So, you may be someone else! I was someone else many times because I spent hundreds of hours analyzing.
You can make bad "new" moves too, and I am guessing that would be "bad theory."
I saw something like this in a CB game the other day:
* when you have three pawns abreast and your opponent pushes a pawn in the middle of them, capture with one of the pawns and push the other. [Of course that depends on the placement of other pieces too!]
In the middlegame section you will see a big emphasis on the importance of the initiative over material gain.
Don't be under the illusion that creating such a book as this is easy--it's not. Often these pithy comments or quotes will be contained within some position or idea in a game and you may have to wrestle whether this particular piece of "info" is applicable to other types of positions or only this one. Ralph Tykodi had to deal with this problem when he created "Purdyisms."
Speaking of Purdy, there are quite a few comments or notes which CJS Purdy could have made and did make. He is even quoted in places but many remarks are familiar.
There are a number of varied lists contained therein. If you were writing a chess computer program some of these would be very valuable.
I can't cover more, the book is just too big. I hope this sampling gives you an idea of its usefulness.
Typos? I haven't seen any. That's almost obscene when these days short cuts are the mainstay of cutting expense to the point of poor readability. Even the design of the book is excellent. I am not sure that some pictures would have helped break up the content or whether its elimination would allow one to completely plow on ahead.
Mike is a true "expert" now in this field and I hope we can sell a lot of copies.
A 5 star book!

An Expert Speaks
By jgr
I feel that the insight of an Expert will be helpful in evaluating this book. According to the United States Chess Federation I am one of the top experts in the U.S. For example I won one of the top American Tournaments, the Chicago Open in the expert class in 2006. Accordingly, I hope my review will be helpful in your deciding to buy this book. I really know from what I speak.
First lets state the obvious this is not your typical GM book, filled with games from the database and some notation usually provided by the computer engine RIBKA. That type of book is interesting but really not very useful. I am including here, the hundreds of books on the openings.
Now I would like to mention an insight I gained from Bobby Fischer. In 1956 Bobby lived with me. That was the year he won the U.S. Jr. Championship, the U.S. Open and the U.S. Closed Championship. This was definitely the year of his great breakthrough. When we were analyzing and I would suggest a move, Bobby would not go ahead with analyzing additional moves. Rather he would ask "what is your idea?" If I could not formulate an idea, he would just ignore the suggestion.
In the long run it is ideas that matter, ideas relating to strategy and tactics.
That is exactly what Mr. Henebry brings with his book. A compendium of the most important chess ideas formulated by the top players that ever lived. Ideas concerning the multiple aspects of this most complicated of all games! This compendium, which is long overdue, is exactly what was needed in the literature of chess.
As Bobby pounded into my head, moves and diagrams are useless without ideas. As every chess player knows there are an infinite number of moves on the board. But as Bobby Fischer illustrated, being equipped with understanding through ideas, allows the infinite number of moves and diagrammed positions to be reduced to concepts that a player can use to win.
"Chess Words of Wisdom" is a great step forward in collecting and categorizing the ideas of the great players.
Enjoy! This is a great book! The ideas encapsulated in the Words of Wisdom are guaranteed to make you a much better player.

Chess Words of Wisdom THEORY and PRACTICE
By Johhny Depp Fan
I got this book a month ago and glanced through it and the history section on GM's style. Then I started to read and study the section on Middlegame. This book had condensed all of the knowledge from many sources, books, DVD, CD's, magazines, online, etc. I recognized a lot of the thoughts and learned many I have never seen before. After I study what I read, I put the theory, the knowledge in practice by thinking about it while I go over the games played by Carlsen, Aronian, Kramnik, Anand, Topalov today online and the games of Kasparov, Karpov, Fischer, Tal, Botvinnik, Alekhine, Capablanca, Lasker and Morphy. In that fashion I deeply learn what I have read in his book. It has allowed me to understand games on a deeper level. In my first tournament since reading the book I won all my games and first place with a 2252 performance rating. What I liked best is the players I have been playing for the last year, before we were battling as equals, yesterday I crushed them all because I had a lot more middlegame knowledge and just saw more into the position than they did. They even admitted this was the first time they felt they had no chance against me. That is empirical proof at least in my case on how to use this book! It is not a book to use alone but to compliment your other studies in chess. I hope this helps others out on how to use this unique book, I strongly recommend it to others if you are willing to put in the effort like I did!
