If you liked Gödel, Escher, Bach...

Full disclosure: the author is my older brother.
Machinamenta is an accessible exploration of what separates man from machine. The author ties together questions from the edges of multiple fields of science, philosophy, religion, game theory, art, biology, neuroscience, programming, mathematics, computation, artificial intelligence, and many others. In being accessible, he doesn't talk down to the reader, but typically assumes that the sort of person reading this book either has enough background in these areas to recognize the names and theories he references, or has the internet close at hand for quick look-ups. Whether you're an artist, a singularitarian, a rationalist, a scientist, a thinker, a geek, an archaeologist, a programmer, a steampunk, or all of the above, you'll find something to like in Machinamenta.

Artificial Intelligence for the rest of us

All right - everyone likes Stephen's review and mine is clearly lame.
Time for a revision. In keeping with Stephen's example - the author is my brother-in-law. I just bought a few copies to give to friends in exchange for reading their dissertations. Hopefully I can translate one of these into a non family review to give readers a less biased viewpoint.
What fun. I've always enjoyed D. SummerStay's writing because he makes marvelous logical connections that seem so simple once he's pointed them out but wouldn't occur to me in a thousand years. He does this in grand form in Machinamenta connecting classic board games (Monopoly,Go,Chess) with millenia old divination techniques and the entire science of Artificial Intelligence. As always once he spells it out it seems so obvious I had to ask him if anyone had ever made this connection before. In answer he shared with me the passage (included in the book) that sparked the thought for him. I didn't see it there but then I could barely understand the passage - hence the need for his narrative in Machinamenta.
I don't think I'm going to far to say this is the most comprehensive text on the history and philosophy of Artificial Intelligence. This is quite a feat seeing as the book is less than 200 pages and has a naturally flowing narrative. By making the connections he does and providing this narrative he's able to give a "Reader's Digest" like snapshot of thousands of pages of reading while adding new meaning rather than watering down the referenced texts.
Having said that it is incredible that it is such an easy read. Normally with technically focused texts I read in 10-30 page sessions before I reach saturation and fall asleep. I think I read this book cover to cover in three sittings and that was due in part to my wife insisting that I come to the table during my second sitting. Marvelously accessible. Suitable as an introductory text for the technical dilettante and yet comprehensive enough to engage and inform a doctoral level reader.

Very broad, but not very deep.

A self-published book that covers a great deal of material in its brief 163 pages. Most topics covered by the book are given a page or two. If you are new to all this stuff, than a book like this might pique your interest, but then you will certainly want to find more in-depth references.
I have expertise in a few of the topics covered by the book, and spotted a few factual errors in those particular topics. I can't attest to the other stuff. For example, Athanasius Kircher was not the tutor of Archduke Charles Joseph Habsburg (but he sent his Organum Mathematicum to the actual tutor).
There are the bones of an interesting book here, but it needs to be significantly longer. This feels shallow and rushed.
